The rocky mountains are the most beautiful thing I have seen in Canada so far. There nestled between them is the town of Canmore. Most people visit Banff or Lake Louise , making Canmore the best “hidden secret”. This town is so dear to my heart , this is where I got married , spent a few christmases. Just last week I was lucky enough to spend the week in Canmore and to volunteer at the Canmore Folk Festival. In this post I will share with you some of my favourite spots to stay , eat and shop.
Things to do
Given that Canmore is in the heart of the mountains , hiking is the most accessible hassle free activity. for a simple hike/walk you might want to try the cougar creek trail. For medium difficulty you could try the Lawrence grassi lakes trail. If you are in for a challenge go for heart mountain , it is an incredible view from the top.
Looking to unwind ? A float down the bow river is just what you need. Not only is the river float slow and relaxing but it also offers a unique perspective on mountain views. If you go through Canmore raft tours you can book 1 hour or 2 hour tours. A bus takes you from and back to your car hassle free. This is also a chance to see some wildlife. On our river float I earned another Canadian badge when I got excited about beavers slapping their tails on the river bank.
Looking for a relaxing time indoors ? look no further than Rapunzels salon and spa. It is in a quite spot with great views and it is an aveda spa. They cover everything from a haircut , massage, facial , manicure , pedicure among other services.
Coffee or tea
For the best coffee and matcha lattes in town I go to no other than Beamers. Full disclosure I lived in Canmore at one point and worked at Beamers. The coffee tastes just as good as I remember it every time that I go back.
Communitea is the spot if you are a tea drinker. They also offer a variety of options for a light lunch. There are a few vegetarian options available. I love their soups , this time it was Thai lemongrass.
I discovered Evoolution on my last visit to Canmore and I fell in love as soon as I walked in. This store is dedicated to olive oil and vinegar. It is beautifully done , the interiors very inviting and the walls lined with all kinds of infused oils. I ended up getting the dirty martini mix , the tuscan herb and orange blood infused oils.
Rocky Mountain Soap Company has been one of my favourite spots in Canmore for a very long time. No visit to Canmore would be complete without a mini shop at this store. Even my sister is addicted , she loves the body scrub. Some of my favourite products are the serious scrub , the tea tree essential oil , the lavender bath salts and the summer lemonade body butter.
Elements is my favourite flower shop in town. I got my wedding flowers from Elements and it was a great seamless experience. I love that the store doesn’t stop at flowers they sell all kinds of plants and planters.
Patio and drinks
The Grizzly Paw a micro brewery and pub. The pub is downtown and the brewery is in a separate building. The brewery is open for tours if you are looking for an indoor activity. The paw offers some of the best beer I’ve had and pretty good pub food. My favourite thing to do is to sit on their patio and sip on the beavertail raspberry ale. I discovered that gluten upsets my digestive system so I can’t have as much beer , but if I wanted to cheat I would pick a paw beer.
Another patio with a great view is the Wood Lounge. The patio is spacious and open and has a good view.
For mexican food look no further than Aroma. My favourite items on the menu so far are the ceviche and garlic shrimp. The margaritas and sangria are pretty good as well.
For a light lunch with an italian twist check out Mountain Mercato. This spot has a bit of a European feel, it is a bistro and speciality shop. So if you are looking for special spices , specific sauces or different kinds of pasta you likely will find them at mountain mercato. The food is also delicious , this time I had the butter leaf salad.
I got married in Canmore at the Bear and Bison. The service at the Bear and Bison was phenomenal. We also stayed at the B&B for two nights and it was a great experience. The food was great and the rooms had a charming rustic feel. Every room had an incredible view of the mountains. This place will always have a special place my heart.
I hope you found my account of Canmore helpful. If you know any other spots in Canmore , let me know I would love to check them out. Until next time 🙂
