Your home is your environment , inspiration and comfort . Without order in your house you end up feeling agitated , scattered and anxious. In this post I will share with you 6 simple tips that will help you maintain the order and bring on the zen.
Everything has a home
To have a tidy home you need to be able to put things away to known spots. Every item needs to have a predetermined spot where it lives. Let your family , roommates or partners know where this place is and reiterate it until it becomes a natural habit. Without having a predetermined home for your items you are just transferring the mess from your living room floor to the closet. Hiding the mess may give you temporary relief but as you open that closet your anxiety will come rushing back.
Store like a pro
The number one issue with creating a home for everything is the lack of space. Most of the time closets and cupboards have a standard rod or shelf that doesn’t take advantage of the full height of the storage space. If you look up into your closet chances are there is a gap up there the can be utilized. Add drawers, baskets, boxes wherever you can to maximize the space. Another trick is to buy furniture with built it storage. For example a bed with drawers underneath, or a couch that flips open with storage underneath.
Make it easy
It is very easy to fill up the storage when you have it and you end up stuffing these drawers and boxes. It becomes impossible for you to know whats in them and you end up buying more of what you have or just not putting things back in their home.
The key to stop yourself from getting to this point is two fold. First, you need to purge your belongings at least 3 times a year. It doesn’t need to be an intimidating task. As soon as you find yourself struggling to put something back to its home , open that box or drawer and purge. This way you only keep the items you love and use.
The second part is to keep the things you use the most in the most accessible spot. For example to maximize the space in my closet , in the summer I store my winter clothing under the bed. The storage space under the bed is not the most accessible but I don’t really need my winter clothes in the summer season. So I keep the clothes that I love and use hanging in the closet where I can easily access them. You can apply this in your kitchen , beauty products, even your storage locker or garage. Just imagine yourself using the items in the space and store the ones you reach for the most in the most accessible spot. This will make it much easier to return an item to its home.
Maintain the zen
To maintain the organization around the house when an activity is over bring the space back to a calm state. When you’re done cooking dinner bring the kitchen back to its organized state. As soon as the guests leave your house bring the living room back to its organized state. When you are done working in your office bring your desk back to its calm state. As soon as you are done with an activity, a room or a space bring it back to its glory. Encourage the people that live with you to do the same. Soon it will become a habit and a natural part of your day.
Some days you will miss a spot or two , you might leave the dishes in the sink and go to bed. Make it part of your morning routine to put things back in order before you do anything else. I wake up first to make sure that I have the time to set the place straight before I get on with my day. As I am tidying I always imagine that a friend is coming over and that they are arriving in 30 mins. This forces me to only focus on the essentials and get the job done as quickly as possible.
